The SMF 1 is designed to enable the spread of contamination on surfaces, equipment, protective clothing and skin to be studied using formulated pastes containing fluorescein as a model for contamination. The simulant is placed on one surface, and after a set time, the surfaces likely to become contaminated are examined with the SMF 1, which will detect down to 0.05ug of the simulant.

 Many applications exist for the SMF 1 including:

  • Movement of contamination studies
  • Cleaning validation studies
  • Training in cleaning techniques
  • Studies of materials application effects
   
  Application of the SMF 1 can easily be extended, by coupling fluorescein to non-fluorescing molecules of interest, so that the resulting compound will have the transfer characteristics of the parent molecule, but the detection ability of fluorescein.
